Supreme Court Judges (in chronological order)

William Martin (1807?-1880) Auckland Supreme Court February 1842-June 1857. Chief Justice 1842-1855. See the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography for further information.

Henry Samuel Chapman (1803-1881) Wellington Supreme Court 1843 – March 1852; sat in Dunedin and Invercargill from 1864-1875. See the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography for further information.

Sidney Stephen (1797-1858) Otago Supreme Court June 1851 - October 1852, no cases were heard. He also presided over the Supreme Court in Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Auckland June 1852-November 1857. Appointed as Chief Justice from 1855-1857. Alexander James Johnston (1820-1888) Nelson, Napier and Wellington Supreme Court November 1858-1880; Christchurch Supreme Court April 1880-?

Henry Barnes Gresson 1809-1901) Christchurch Supreme Court, December 1857; November 1858; July 1862 – March 1875. See the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography for further information.

Christopher William Richmond (1821-1889) Christchurch Supreme Court November-December 1862; Dunedin Supreme Court October 1863-1867; Hokitika and Nelson Supreme Court 1867-1876; Wellington Supreme Court 1877-1895 See the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography for further information.

Thomas Bannatyne Gilles (1828-1889) Supreme Court at Auckland 1875-1889. Gilles was the first appointee to the Supreme Court who had been admitted to the profession through local law examinations. See the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography for further information.

Joshua Strange Williams (1837-1915) Dunedin Supreme Court March 1875-January 1904. He also presided over the Christchurch Supreme Court periodically. See the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography for further information.
