Mevo: a new smart and sustainable transport option

The University has recently become the first university in New Zealand to enter into an agreement with Mevo, an on-demand, car sharing alternative.

“Mevo is a cost effective and sustainable alternative to using taxis and car hire. Its flexible pricing offers minute, hour, day, and evening rates, so it will in many cases work out more cost effective than taxi use for work purposes, particularly travelling between campuses or to and from the airport,” says Andrew Wilks, Director, Sustainability Office.

“Mevo is also the world's first “climate positive” car share. Mevo reduces emissions by charging its hybrid electric cars on New Zealand's 80% renewable grid, and offsets anything else its fleet emits by 120%. This leaves a net deficit in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere with every kilometre a Mevo vehicle drives.”

Mevo is also a Wellington based company whose founders (Erik Zydevelt and Finn Lawrence) met while studying Environmental Studies here.

It is simple to use. After registering and downloading the Mevo app, each time you want to use a Mevo, you simply open the app, select the closest vehicle, unlock with your phone and drive to your destination.  You can end your trip at any council metered, coupon, or P120 and above parking space within the Mevo “home zone” (which is clearly shown on the app).   There is designated Mevo parking available at Wellington Airport.

Mevo will also provide us with detailed reporting of vehicle usage, billing and carbon.

To find out more about Mevo and how to use it, you can attend one of three information sessions, check out the Mevo website, or contact Jenny Spence, Facilities Sustainability Manager.
