Bring back your boomerangs

A scheme to reduce use of takeaway cups on campus has hit a snag - people are forgetting to return the cups.

Last year the University’s Sustainability Office worked with the student club Plastic Diet to introduce the Boomerang recycling scheme to the University. VicBooks and Louis’ Cafe on the Kelburn campus have signed up to the scheme, which enables people to pick up a cup, purchase a hot drink, and then drop the cup back to café to be washed and reused.

However recently the cafes have run out of reusable cups. The Sustainability office is offering an amnesty for people to quietly return the cups to the bins at the cafes or in the Hub.

“It’s great that people are using the cups but the scheme does rely on them being dropped back,” says the University’s Director, Sustainability, Andrew Wilks. “It’s fine to take a cup away but please make sure you return it.”

Anyone wanting to donate cups to the scheme can contact the office. They are looking for any tidy – unchipped- cups.
