History or background of award

In collaboration, Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui and Victoria University of Wellington look to support the next generation of scientist through the Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui Science Award funded by The Zoological Society of San Diego. Two scholarships will be awarded annually by Te Rōpū Āwhina, the on-campus whanau support for Māori and Pasifika students within the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and Architecture and Design.

Purpose of award

Established through funding from The Zoological Society of San Diego, these awards look to support two students studying towards a Bachelor of Science. The scholarship will be put towards tuition fees.

Selection criteria

•    Applicants must be a registered member of Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui.
•    Applicants must be studying towards a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Hons) at Victoria University of Wellington.
•    Applicants must be of Maori and/or Pasifika descent.

Decision makers

Selection will be made by a panel comprised of appropriate professional and academic staff, chaired by Te Rōpū Āwhina. Student applications will also be reviewed by Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui external Education Grant assessor before being awarded. 

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

Scholarship recipients will be expected to be a part of the Āwhina programme for the following year, participating in the mentoring and outreach programme.
Students are asked to write a letter of appreciation upon accepting this scholarship.
