History and purpose

Chubb Life Insurance NZ Ltd (Chubb) has been an employer of actuaries in both Auckland and Wellington for many years. Chubb is very interested to play its part in the local community to promote the actuarial profession as a career and support those wishing to study actuarial science and later work as an actuary.

The purpose of the award is to encourage students to consider the actuarial profession and the Actuarial Science major offered at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Also, to promote Chubb as an employer of actuaries, providing health and well-being solutions to customers across NZ.

Who is eligible?

  • Academic excellence (Applicants should have an A- grade average)
  • Enrolled in a second year (or later) of BSc or BCom, majoring in Actuarial Science, Data Science, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics or a similar major
  • Open to domestic and international students residing in New Zealand. Preference will be given to candidates intending to stay and work in New Zealand in the actuarial profession after the completion of their study.

  • Selection will be made based on academic excellence (Applicants should have an A- grade average).
  • Applicants must be currently studying full time at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • Applicants must submit a formal written application/covering letter that describes why you want to be an actuary, that clearly shows your understanding of how actuaries can make a difference to business and individual customers and demonstrates your communication skills.
  • Applicant must provide a copy of their CV.

Selection process

The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation. The Foundation will expect recipients to write a letter of thanks to the donor's family on receipt of the award and an end of year progress report.

Applications will be reviewed by the Heads of the Schools of Mathematics and Statistics and Economics and Finance, and the Chief Actuary, Actuary Team Leader, HR and CEO of Chubb NZ.

Where appropriate, applicants will be invited for a personal interview with a Chubb NZ representative.

Additional information

Up to 1 award will be offered per year, subject to their being a candidate who meets the selection criteria.

The current year’s tertiary fees will be paid to the candidate up to the value of $5000, subject to availability of funds.

The successful candidate may also be offered an internship at Chubb Life Insurance NZ Ltd over the summer break, subject to there being a vacant intern position available and their legal right to work in New Zealand (international students only).

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
