History or background of award

This award has been established by Dr Ray Watters, an alumnus and retired staff member of Victoria University. Dr Watters taught at Victoria University for 38 years, giving courses on Latin America, Historical Geography, the Pacific and Chinese Peasantry. As a researcher, Dr Watters was one of the pioneers of the so-called 'Victoria School of Geography' with its (then new) emphasis on development, culture, colonialism and political economy.

Purpose of award

One award will be given annually to a student enrolled in an Honours, Master's or PhD programme in Geography, Development Studies or Environmental Studies in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington who is undertaking research in the South Pacific, Latin America or Asia.

Selection criteria

The award is to enable fieldwork or other major outlay to be funded, bearing in mind the value and relevance of the research to local people in the country where it is carried out.

Additional information

No award shall be made in any year in which the Programme Directors consider there is no suitable candidate. If in any year the award is not made, the funds may be used in a subsequent year.

Decision makers

The award will be made on the basis of academic merit and recommendation of the Programme Directors of Geography and Development Studies and endorsed by the Board of Studies of the Geography Programme.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

• The Victoria University Foundation will ask the recipient to write a thank you letter to the donor on receiving the award.
• The award recipient will also be asked to provide a research report to the donor.
