Anxiety is a normal response when we are faced with stressful situations. There are effective ways to deal with anxiety so that it doesn’t control your life.
Anxiety is a very common reason for students at Victoria to seek counselling. Anxiety is a normal human response that everyone experiences to some degree. Anxiety arises in response to perceived threats to our safety—whether physical or emotional.
Anxiety affects our body as well as our thinking. Physical symptoms of anxiety include: a racing heart, sweating, breathlessness, dizziness, shaking, a tight chest, nausea, stomach aches and muscle tension. When we are anxious, we tend to worry a lot and to focus on what might go wrong—which only leads to more anxiety! Escalating anxiety prompts us to try to avoid situations that make us anxious. For some people, heightened anxiety can lead to panic attacks.
If anxiety is interfering with your ability to cope with life and do the things you want to do, Student Counselling can help you explore what is causing your anxiety, and develop skills to reduce anxiety.
