Fruit and vegetable co-operative

Join our fruit and vegetable co-op and enjoy fresh and affordable produce delivered to your campus each week.

Victoria University of Wellington's fruit and vegetable co-op is a non-profit social enterprise supported by the University's student and staff wellbeing teams, Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association, Wesley Community Action, and Wellington Regional Public Health. The co-op—available for staff and students—makes use of bulk buying power and volunteer labour to package bags of fresh fruit and vegetables, and is a great way to bring healthy food into our community.

What you get

For $12 (paid one week in advance) you will receive one bag of fruit and one of vegetables, comprising of six to eight varieties. These bags of fresh, seasonal food represent great value. You can order as many bags as you need, as often as you like.

How to order

It is a pre-order-and-pay system, order by 5 pm Thursday and pick up the following Thursday.

You can collect your fruit and vegetables from one of these three hubs:

  • Kelburn campus: The Hunter Lounge, Level 3, Student Union Building (11 am–12.30 pm).
  • Pipitea campus: Mezzanine Floor, Rutherford House (10.30–11.30 am).
  • Te Aro campus: Outside the Architecture and Design Library's main entrance, Level 1, Vivian Street (11–11.30 am).

The co-op model is a partnership: student and staff volunteers pack and distribute your order and you pay and pick-up your orders at the arranged times. Unfortunately, because the produce is perishable, if you do not collect your bags or arrange for someone else to collect them, the University is unable to store them. Orders are bought in advance, so no refunds are available.

If you would like further information about the co-op, email fruit-vegecoop@vuw.ac.nz.

Returnable fabric bags

The co-op is proudly plastic-bag free, with all orders packed into the co-op's returnable fabric bags.

To help us stay plastic-bag free, we'll need your support in returning the bags to us each week so we can pack them again with more fresh produce.

How our returnable bags works

All returnable fabric bags belong to the University's fruit and vegetable co-op and are only for use for your fruit and vegetable co-op order.

When you get your order home, unpack the fabric bags as soon as possible, turn them inside out and shake out any leaves, and if necessary, hang them up to dry. You don't need to wash them—the co-op will check and prepare returned bags before they are reused.

Return the co-op's bags within seven days, either at the next co-op order collection or at one of our returnable bag drop-off points on campus:

  • Kelburn campus: VUWSA Kelburn office, Level 4, Student Union Building.
  • Pipitea campus: Reception desk, Te Taunaki, Mezzanine floor, Rutherford House.
  • Te Aro campus: Book return slot, Architecture and Design Library main entrance, Level 1, Vivian Street.

When you collect your order, you are also welcome to transfer your fruit and vegetables into your own clean reusable bags.

If you would like further information about the returnable bags, email fruit-vegecoop@vuw.ac.nz.

Volunteer with the co-op

We’re looking for a team of students and staff to volunteer time and energy to promote healthy eating, and to support the successful running of the co-op.

Your role will include volunteering at either a packing hub or a distribution hub. You will be able to show off your coordinating and distribution skills, promote health and wellbeing, earn Victoria Plus and Victoria International Leadership Programme points, and participate in an initiative that will provide you with amazing work experience and look great on your CV.

If you are keen to make a difference and promote health and wellbeing at the University, email fruit-vegecoop@vuw.ac.nz to learn where and how you can help.
