Beta Alpha Psi

Beta Alpha Psi is an organisation for students of Information Systems, Finance, and Accounting—its focus is on networking and professional development.

Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary students’ organisation, founded in 1919, with over 300 chapters and 300,000 members across the United States and Oceania. We are dedicated to encouraging and recognising scholastic and professional excellence in the fields of accounting, finance, and business information.

The Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington chapter offers a plethora of events to its members throughout the year, focusing on developing three pathways:

Essential professional skills

Work in a professional environment often differs from work at a university, and many students find the transition challenging. At Beta Alpha Psi, we coordinate with business professionals to run seminars to equip members with the skills they need.

We run workshops covering:

  • how to interact with clients
  • how firms expect you to use Excel
  • how to write a business report
  • how to sell an idea persuasively
  • how to set up and maintain a professional online presence.

Networking

A big part of success in the corporate world is forming connections and getting to know people. This can be difficult for university students without existing professional relationships. Beta Alpha Psi arranges opportunities for members to meet and talk with prominent figures in the accounting and finance community.

Events we hold include:

  • office tours with the major accounting firms and government departments
  • access to presentations and networking events
  • mock interviews with real leaders from the influential firms
  • meet-and-greets with your fellow Beta Alpha Psi members.

Well rounded

It is no longer enough to have good grades. Organisations want empathetic employees with passion and a desire to contribute to the community. Beta Alpha Psi recognises this and sets up opportunities for members to volunteer for a wide range of charities throughout the year.

In addition, this year we are developing a mentor programme for our members to assist younger students. It’s great for your résumé and even better for your worldview.

Charities we’ve worked with in the past include:

  • Mary Potter Hospice
  • The Red Puppy Appeal
  • Wellington SPCA
  • Wellington Zoo
  • Wellington South Coast Beach Clean-up.
