Specialist clinical services

Student Health offers a number of different specialist services. We can arrange appointments on campus, or point you in the right direction.

All specialist appointments are by referral only. This means that you'll need to see a doctor before you are referred on to a specialist. This excludes services such as physiotherapy, optometry and dentistry—you can book in directly to see these professionals.

Specialists at Student Health

You can see the following specialists at either Kelburn or Pipitea campus:

  • Dermatologist—skin specialist
  • Endocrinologist—diabetes specialist
  • Health improvement practitioner

Higher charges may apply. See our pricing schedule for further information.

HIV PrEP consultations

PrEP stands for “pre-exposure prophylaxis” and is a medication which can be taken by HIV negative people to prevent HIV infection. It is fully funded for people who are at higher risk of acquiring HIV, but those who are lower risk can opt to pay for their prescriptions.

To find out more and to see if PrEP is right for you, have a look at this website.

HIV PrEP is available at Mauri Ora Student Health. If you would like to start PrEP, the first step is to book into a “PrEP nurse appointment” so that we can get things started and explain what it entails. Being on PrEP means having STI checks (including a blood test) every 3 months. After the nurse appointment you will be booked to see one of our GP’s who prescribes PrEP.

PrEP does not protect against any other STI’s and so condoms are still a great idea.

Radiology

Student Health make referrals to any local radiology providers. You can discuss your options with a health professional at Student Health.

Physiotherapy

The Physio Spot runs student clinics on the Kelburn campus and at two other locations in Wellington.

This service is not run by Student Health—you'll need to call 0800 842 749 to book, or book an appointment online.

Optometry

Student Health does not offer appointments with optometrists—however, we do recommend contacting Specsavers or Matthews Eyewear, as these clinics offer student discounts.

Dentistry

Dentistry appointments are likewise not offered at Student Health. If you're in need of a dentist, you'll need to arrange this outside of our service. Victoria University of Wellington students receive discounted rates at Wellington Dentists.
