Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Bill English, hosted the School of Government anniversary and annual prize giving at Parliament’s Banquet Hall last month.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Commerce Professor Bob Buckle, and Head of School Girol Karacaoglu were among the esteemed guests to celebrate the prize winners and the School’s successful year.

Nine prizes were awarded on the night, acknowledging the achievements of the students who had shown academic excellence and a commitment to their studies.

The Vice-Chancellor told the prize winners on the night that "the things you have learnt and the skills you have acquired while studying, stand you in good stead for a challenging and rewarding future."

Professor Guilford also noted that it was 14 years since the School was established, and significantly, that it has retained its status as the only School of Government in the country.

This year has been a busy and productive one for the School, with more gains on the horizon. The School is ready to be considered for accreditation by the Network of Schools of Public Policy Affairs and Administration – the global standard in public service education.

If successful, the School of Government will be the first school in the southern hemisphere to hold the accreditation. It would also provide staff more opportunities to interact with other leading public affairs programmes overseas.

The celebration also acknowledged staff, students and others who had contributed to the School’s continued excellence in educating students for public service.
