The School of Government's Director of Internationalisation, Professor Evan Berman, attended the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Graduate School of Public Administration at Thailand's preeminent education programme, earlier this month.

Professor Berman was invited to deliver a presentation in front of about 900 people gathered at the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

His discussion 'Public Leadership in National Departments' highlighted the importance of different roles of political leaders and senior public officials.

While political officials often focus on a few key issues of political and ideological significance, senior civil servants must provide broad leadership for everything else, including overseeing departmental policies and undertaking capability development, he said.

He also discussed concerns and new efforts to increase senior public manager leadership in New Zealand and around the world.

Professor Berman said it was a "great honour and privilege" to be one of the three international guests invited to speak.

"This really reflects the standing of New Zealand public governance in the region, especially with regards to performance, leadership and integrity."

His presentation was covered in Strong leadership from senior civil servants key to policy, an article in the Thai newspaper The Nation.

Victoria University has a Memorandum of Understanding with NIDA, and Professor Berman said there are plans to deepen the relationship with the possibility of future research and educational exchanges.
