Research

The School of Languages and Cultures is committed to high-quality research to enhance our knowledge of language, literature, cultural history, and translation.

Staff in the School of Languages and Cultures undertake research in a wide range of areas, including the theory and practice of language teaching, literary and cultural studies, area studies, history, and translation. Researchers in the School have been awarded important internal and external funding for their projects, and many staff are also engaged in international research collaborations. Our staff have published widely and the quality of their research is recognised and respected both nationally and internationally. For details on research areas and lists of publications, please see our staff profile pages.

As part of our commitment to research, we welcome applications from graduate students who want to study towards a Master of Arts (MA) or PhD degree. For information on these programmes of study, see our postgraduate study page, or contact our postgraduate coordinator. Further information about current and recent MA and PhD projects in the School of Languages and Cultures can be found on our student profiles page.

Our School also runs a very successful research seminar programme every year, with contributions by academic staff, postgraduate students and visiting scholars. See our research seminar page for details.
