Welcome from the Head of the School of Languages and Cultures.
Welcome to the School of Languages and Cultures (SLC). As part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, we contribute to a strong and vibrant Humanities programme at Victoria University.
Our School is made up of nine different undergraduate majors: Asian Studies, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Pacific Studies, Samoan Studies/Matā‘upu Tau Samoa and Spanish and Latin American Studies. We also offer postgraduate qualifications in all these subjects, except Samoan Studies. Literary Translation Studies and Second Language Learning and Teaching are also offered at postgraduate level. Our range of courses includes language courses from beginners to advanced levels, as well as courses in literature, film, cultural studies, intellectual history and translation. Our highly-qualified staff combine innovative approaches to teaching with interdisciplinary perspectives on research. Academic staff in the School have strong research profiles and many staff are engaged in international research collaborations.
Students in the School of Languages and Cultures have access to state-of-the-art language learning facilities in the Language Learning Centre, and we strongly encourage students to take part in study abroad programmes as part of their degrees.
We welcome enquiries from potential undergraduate and postgraduate students. We hope you find the information you need on our website, but please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further help.
We look forward to welcoming you to the School in the near future.
Dr Sarah (Sally) Hill
