Subtitling is often dismissed as a tool for communication, without any literary credibility in the field of translation. The 2014/2015 Summer Scholarship encompassed subtitling The Dark Horse, a New Zealand film with many cultural references, which are often difficult to translate. Add to that the constraints of subtitling, such as the number of characters on screen, the rate of speech and the reading speed of an audience, and the translation becomes an extremely challenging task.
The subtitles were completed through the hard work of Rory, with the assistance of native speaker of Italian, Francesca Benocci (PhD candidate in Literary Translation Studies), and the supervision of Dr Marco Sonzogni, Senior Lecturer in Italian and current Director of the New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation.
On Tuesday 27th October, at the University’s Te Herenga Waka Marae, The Dark Horse was screened with the Italian subtitles to an audience which included guest of honour, Mr Tom Hern, co-founder of Four Knights Film and Producer of The Dark Horse; H.E. Carmelo Barbarello Italian Ambassador to New Zealand; and H.E. Yosef Livne, Israeli Ambassador to New Zealand; Associate Professor Paul Warren, who was Associate Dean (PGR) when the project started; Dr Claudia Bernardi, Senior Lecturer and Italian Programme Director.
The screening―which opened with a formal welcome (whakatau) by Professor Piri Sciscia, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Māori)―was a very special occasion, showcasing the innovative and exciting work produced in the Italian Programme and in the School of Languages and Cultures.
We hope that the subtitles will be picked up by Four Knights Film, and the movie will be released in Italy in the not too distant future.
