As it has become a bit of a tradition in the School of Languages and Cultures, students from the Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish programmes as well as a team from the Victoria International Leadership Programme (VILP) competed in the annual multilingual Masterchef in the last week of term. This year’s competition ran under the title Rice to the Occasion, which meant all teams had to produce a staple rice dish from the culture of the language they are learning. Graham Lastname from Social Cooking welcomed the teams and VIP guests in his kitchen on the waterfront again. All teams had two hours to prepare their food. While preparing students only spoke their respective languages and were enthusiastically supported by their Programmes’ teaching staff. A jury comprised of representatives of various Embassies, VUW Senior Management and local food experts David Burton (Le Cordon Bleu) and Roberto Giorgioni (Bongusto) who then judged the dishes on taste and presentation. The VILP team took away the top spot with their beautiful plate of “Intercultural Tapas” closely followed by the French team’s dessert “Verrines à la Parisienne” and the Japanese team’s celebratory ‘scattered’ sushi “ちらし寿司 Chirashizushi”.

This event would not have been possible without the generous support of PVC International Engagement Professor Rob Rabel, the VILP team and Marco Sonzogni’s vision and perseverance to make the Multilingual Masterchef a firm fixture in the events’ calendar of language students and global citizens of Victoria University.
