Languages and Law student selected for prestigious conference in Paris
Congratulations to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student Jessica Sutton who has been selected by the French Embassy to represent New Zealand at LabCitoyen in Paris in July.
LabCitoyen is a week-long event involving young French speakers from all over the world and is conducted entirely in French. The theme of the 2019 conference is women's rights, equality and citizenship.
Jessica was chosen as a result of her work with female refugees, both with the Red Cross and tutoring English for English Language Partners—an organisation helping new New Zealanders learn the English they need to live independent lives. Jessica’s work with the VUWSA-associated ‘Not Above the Law’ campaign, promoting the safety of young women in workplaces, and in law reform as a clerk at the New Zealand Law Commission also contributed to her selection for the conference.
The selection process is very competitive and Jessica is thrilled that her application was successful: “I'm very excited to have the opportunity to discuss issues which are so close to my heart, while also speaking the language that I love.”
