Video interview: Rory McKenzie (PhD LITR)

Rory gives some tips for aspiring language learners and shares with us some of the joys of his time studying languages and translation studies at Victoria, all in Italian.

Video by Benjamin Swale.

In this video Rory talks about some of his experiences of learning Italian with the School of Languages and Cultures. He also shares what he would tell his younger self if he were starting to learn Italian today as well as gives a suggestion for a useful Language Learning Centre resource.

Rory is currently a PhD student studying Literary Translation Studies in the School of Languages and Cultures. As well as being a tutor for the Italian programme, he runs the Victoria University of Wellington Applied Translation Service. Last, but not least, he is an Assistant at the Language Learning Centre.

He continually looks for ways to improve his teaching as a tutor within the Italian programme and tries to find new ways to make his students’ experience with the language more engaging. This week we found him erasing text in the speech bubbles in an Italian graded reader. It forms part of an assignment for second year students who need to create their own narrative employing specific grammar and vocabulary covered during their course. We thought it was pretty creative!
