Dr Janet Toland and Dr Allan Sylvester represent a strong new leadership team that will be continuing the growth and standing of the School of Information Management.
About Dr Janet Toland
Dr Janet Toland has been appointed Head of the School of Information Management as of January 2018. An expert in the areas of sustainable information systems and the history of ICT, Janet brings to the position a wealth of expertise. She brings a global perspective having served on the faculties at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle (UK), Sheffield Hallam University (UK), Tonota College of Education (Botswana), and at the University of the South Pacific (Fiji).
Originally from the UK, Dr Toland worked as a programmer and business analyst before moving into academia. She has an MSc in Business Systems Analysis and Design from City University, UK and a PhD in Information Systems from Victoria University of Wellington. She currently teaches enterprise architecture, sustainable information systems and information systems management, recently served as the Acting Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching for Victoria Business School, and has previously been Programme Director for the Undergraduate, BBIS and Honours programmes, as well as Coordinator of Learning and Teaching for the School of Information Management, and Acting Chair of the SIM Human Ethics Committee.
About Dr Allan Sylvester
Dr Allan Sylvester has been appointed Deputy Head of School. An expert in the areas of telecommunications policy, e-learning, and public sector IT, Dr Sylvester brings a wealth of business education and industry experience particularly in the areas of technology service delivery in telecommunications, health technologies, business computing, software development, network construction and technical support service delivery. Dr Sylvester moved into academic pursuits in late 2000 and now actively researches on the role of ICT in public sector informatics, education leadership and social equity. He has an interest in using technology to enable innovative and effective pedagogy that will lead to engaging and authentic learning experiences for students. For the last five years he has served as the Undergraduate and Honours/Master of Commerce Programme Director for the School of Information Management.
