SGEES Geographers receive top award

SGEES Geographers received top awards for 2013 by the Geography Society.

Victoria University geographers have featured very prominently in the New Zealand Geographical Society Annual Awards 2013

Professor Philip Morrison received one of two Distinguished New Zealand Geographer awards, the highest awarded by the Society. This award – and medal – recognises Phil’s contribution to research, teaching and policy over many years. Only one other Victoria University geographer (Ray Watters in 2009) has received one of these awards since they were introduced in 2001.

Dr Mairead de Roiste received a President’s ‘Teaching in Geography’ award.

Dr Kevin Norton received a President’s ‘Emerging Researcher in Geography’ award.

Dr Sara Kindon received a ‘Best Doctoral Thesis’ award.

Laura McKim received a ‘Best Master’s Thesis’ award.

These awards will be presented in person at the Society’s AGM in Wellington in September.

John Overton comments that “This is a wonderful result for Victoria University geography and a measure of the esteem our geographers are held in by the wider geography community in the country.”

Congratulations to you all.
