Victoria University student first recipient of Women in Spatial Conference Scholarship

Rosey Harris, an Undergraduate student, majoring in Physical Geography and Environmental Science, was awarded this scholarship and attended one of the two top Spatial Industry conferences in New Zealand.

“I was given the opportunity to fuel my passion, add to my knowledge base and meet others in the community,” says Rosey, “I am really passionate about everything Geographic Information Science (GIS) and can’t wait to be employed in this field.”

Rosey attended the GeoCart’2018 conference, which took place in Wellington in September. This conference brought together a wide cross section of professionals, researchers, and enthusiasts engaged in cartography, map curatorship and research, geovisualisation and GIScience.

“The conference was really inspiring–there was such a diverse range of people, from a range of backgrounds, all sharing the same passion,” says Rosey. “I learnt that GIS can be incorporated into a diverse range of roles.  Everyone was very friendly, approachable and keen to talk about what they had been working on—it was a truly rewarding experience.”

The Women in Spatial group seeks to support and encourage women in the surveying and spatial profession. In return for attending the conference, Rosey will give a lightning talk at one of their meetings later this year.
