Current research projects

My current research focuses primarily on the classical tradition in English literature and in particular on the uses of classical mythology. Two current projects are:

  • Classical mythology in the works of James K Baxter: a book project in collaboration with Paul Millar and John Davidson, drawing both on Baxter's published and unpublished work.
  • Pygmalion and his statue in English literature: a study tracing the legend from its Ovidian origins to its offshoots in contemporary popular culture, and exploring its complex implication in debates about art, religion, sexuality, gender, class, education, and science.

Areas of supervision

  • Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature.
  • Classical Traditions in English Literature.
  • Children's Fantasy.
  • James K Baxter.

Selection of publications

  • (Ed.) Classical Mythology in English Literature: A Critical Anthology (London and New York: Routledge, 1999). 'a much-needed, indeed unique, sourcebook for teachers of the classical heritage in literature.'
    Classical Review
  • Shakespeare and the Constant Romans (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1996).
'It is rare to find such a persuasive combination of tight intellectual history, insightful philosophic analysis, and lively literary criticism.'
