Profile

Bob’s research in economics and public policy includes macroeconomics, growth, business cycles, fiscal, taxation and monetary policy and tertiary education policy. His career spans academia, public policy, management and the private sector. He was Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Victoria Business School from 2008 to 2017; Principal Adviser at NZ Treasury from 2000 to 2008, Chair of the Economic Committee of APEC in 2007 and 2008, Chair of the Government’s 2009-10 Tax Working Group, and Chair of the External Panel for Treasury’s Long-Term Fiscal Statement in 2012. Bob was a member of the School of Economics and Finance from 1981 to 2000 including a period as Head of School. He is currently an External Member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, chairs review teams for the European Foundation for Management Development and is an ambassador for VUW’s ‘Great Futures’ scholarships programme.

Honours include NZIER New Zealand Economist of the Year, 2003; Life Member of the NZ Association of Economists, 2009; VUW award for Public Contribution, 2010. In 2014 Bob was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for contributions to business and education.
