Yvonne Booysen

Originally starting with a single major in Geology, Yvonne opted to take a 100-level chemistry course out of interest, which saw her rethink her degree.

Yvonne looks straight at the camera. She sits by the window in a cafe with a green coffee mug next to her on the bench.

“The teaching staff of this course were quick to take me under their wing and they gave me the confidence boost I needed to pursue chemistry as part of a double major.

“There is a strong practical element to the chemistry courses, which provides a really good foundation for either postgraduate study or industry. The highlight of my degree was the two third year laboratory courses, where you get a chance to apply the knowledge and research skills gained in the earlier years of study. One of these courses involved a 6-week long placement in a functioning research lab, which was incredible.”

Yvonne had the opportunity to undertake two summer research scholarships, which she found to be a great way for gaining a taste for both research and the regularity of a 9-5 job. “This really helped to ease the transition into the post-university world.”

Her advice for future students… “Your professors and tutors are there to help you. Don’t be intimidated by a subject that seems harder than others – there is so much support at university if you seek it out, and everyone wants to see you succeed.”
