SCPS events for schools
The School of Chemical and Physical Sciences is again offering Outreach educational programmes in Chemistry and Physics for 2018. The programmes will provide your students with opportunities to visit Victoria University and experience the excitement of experimental Chemistry and Physics in a tertiary educational environment. We intend the programme to extend students who have a strong interest in these sciences and who enjoy a challenge.
It’s time for the annual New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (Wellington Branch) Chemistry Quiz! Hosted in association with Victoria University of Wellington, the quiz is open to teams from all secondary schools in the greater Wellington area. Teams are made up of four students from years 12 or 13. This year, we can accommodate up to two teams per school. The quiz is scheduled for Wednesday, 20 June at Victoria University in the recreation centre gym, but may be subject to change.
Sign in for the quiz will open at 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start and the quiz is expected to finish by 9:00 pm. Entertainment will be provided for teachers and parents. This gives them a chance to get together over supper while the students scratch their heads at the diabolical chemistry questions thrown at them by the evening’s hosts! The quiz will challenge student’s chemistry curriculum knowledge, their general chemistry knowledge and their general knowledge, and there are some great prizes to be won for both the students and their schools.
A link to sign up your teams will be available in April. We ask that you complete registration by 1 May, and then advise us of team names and the names of your team members by 14 June via email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Senior Lab Experience Days
This year, we will be running full-day (9:00am – 3:00pm) Chemistry Lab Experience Days, June 27th – 29th. We will provide lunch for the students. These programs will be suitable for Year 13 and advanced Year 12 students. The registration link for these days will be available from 14 May.
This day will focus on synthesis and spectroscopy. The morning will involve the synthesis of a esters with techniques for how to monitor reactions. In the afternoon, the students will gain hands-on experience with some of the spectroscopic instruments used in the characterisation of organic molecules, including IR and NMR spectroscopy. This will involve workshops on spectroscopy that will be geared towards the experience level of each school. Due to popularity, the maximum number of students each school can bring is 25. However, please note on your form how many additional places you would like, and if you are flexible as to your preferred day. After the sign-up closing date, we will review these requests and aim to allow as many students as we are safely able to.
These workshops fill up fast so you will need to get in early as bookings will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the costs incurred in running these events, please note that there is a $100 cancellation fee.
In order to ensure that all able students are able to attend our programs, we invite schools to apply for scholarships to aid in the transport costs of attending these events. Please note on your application form if you wish to be considered for this additional funding. For further information and questions about the Senior and Junior Lab Experience Days, please direct your enquiries to Joyce Lan at email@example.com.
Chemistry Scholarship Practical Workshop 4 July 2018
This day is designed to provide students with:
- Guided practice for carrying out experiments in the laboratory with an emphasis on why you are performing certain tasks
- An understanding on sources of uncertainty in analytical data derived from experimental analysis
- An understanding of the concept of back titration
- Practice in using data to solve problems in chemistry
Two experiments will be carried out, an organic synthesis and an analysis of aspirin using a back titration (includes links to organic chemistry). There will also be a problem solving session.
Scholarship Practice Days 8 - 9 October 2018
Physics Scholarship Workshop 8 October 2018
Chemistry Scholarship Workshop 9 October 2018
Are you taking the NCEA Scholarship Science Exams this year?
Join our Faculty staff for our popular scholarship series, where you’ll be given guidance on the knowledge and skills you’ll need to get the best chance possible.

Junior Lab Experience Days, Chemistry and Physics
13 - 15 November 2018
Year 10 Outreach Programme: We are inviting you to nominate up to five year 10 students with ability and interest in science to attend our Year 10 - From Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology. The aim of this day is to engage able year 10 students in some cutting edge science experiments related to the chemistry, physics. The programme includes a nanotechnology component and the science behind mobile phones. Students will work in two laboratories, see presentations from people working in related areas, and tour research facilities at Victoria University. Throughout the programme students will learn about the process of science, see the relevance of science to their own lives and the potential of science to solve some of the big issues that face the world today.
The programme will run over three days – 13th to 15th November. At this stage we would like you to register your students for the workshops nominating the preferred day for them to attend. Places are limited and we will allocate in order of registration.
The day will run from 9.00 to 2.30 pm. There is no charge and a paper bag lunch will be provided. However, due to the cost of running this event, a cancellation fee of $50 applies.
Chemistry and Physics Teachers' Days 2018
This year Victoria University is offering its Chemistry and Physics Teachers’ Days in Wellington, Auckland and Nelson. These days provide an opportunity for teachers to network and learn from each other, think about some of the latest developments in their favourite discipline and discuss topical educational matters. Please feel free to let us know if there is something, in particular that you would like to learn about or see addressed at these events. We are also including:
- high level problem solving (scholarships)
- spectroscopy basics (chemistry - Nelson)
- hollywood’s interpretation of the laws of physics (physics)
- workshop using NFC and QE code technology (physics)
- teachers’ choices (see enrolment form to make suggestions)
- teachers’ forum to address issues of the day
A more detailed programme will be sent out in a few weeks.
