Eligibility

An award known as Te Tohu Whakamaumaharatanga ki a Wiremu Parker (The Wiremu Parker Memorial Award) was established in 1988 as a memorial to the late Dr Wiremu Parker (Hon. D. Lit.) who died 10 November 1986. It is awarded to recognise notable academic achievement, and to pay special tribute to the contributions made by the recipient to the cultural life of Te Herenga Waka whanau. Candidates must be of the status of taipakeke (mature student) and should have either passed the Tohu Moritanga (Diploma in Maoritanga) or be a Maori Studies major for the Bachelor of Arts Degree.

History or background of award
An award known as Te Tohu Whakamaumaharatanga ki a Wiremu Parker (The Wiremu Parker Memorial Award) was established in 1988 as a memorial to the late Dr Wiremu Parker (Hon. D. Lit.) who died 10 November 1986.

Selection criteria
Candidates for the award must be of the status of taipakeke (mature student) and should have either passed the Tohu Moritanga (Diploma in Maoritanga) or be a Maori Studies major for the Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Number of awards offered
Usually one, but in exceptional cases two awards may be presented in any one year.

The award will be a taonga which reflects the fields of endeavour and interests of Wiremu Parker.

Closing dates for applications
No application required. However, recommendations can be made in writing by any member of the whanau of Te Herenga Waka, and submitted to the Tumuaki, Te Kawa a Maui.

Decision makers
The final selection will be made by the staff of Te Kawa a Maui.

Additional information
The presentation of the award will be made at Te Tumu Herenga Waka during the December Te Hui Whakapûmau graduation celebration.
