Information

This prize has been established by Erica McLean via the Victoria University Foundation in memory of her mother, Ilse B Steinberger.

Ilse Steinberger was born on 22 December 1906 in Buffalo, New York and later moved to Oakland, California. Once her daughter was in kindergarten she began part-time university study, receiving a provisional teaching credential. Following her husband's death in 1960 she returned to study, graduating in 1963 with Great Distinction from San Jose State College, where she was elected to Phi Kappa Phi. A gifted teacher, Ilse taught in elementary schools in California from 1956 until her retirement in 1974. In 1978 she moved to New York, where she served as a tutor in the public school system, a reader for Lighthouse International, and a founding member and treasurer of the Gamma Alpha chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a professional honorary society of women educators.

One prize will be awarded annually to the top Graduate Diploma on Teaching (Primary) student or Masters of Teaching and Learning (Primary) student in the Wellington Faculty of Education. Recipients must achieve both academic excellence and excellence in their teaching performance in the relevant year.

The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the Wellington Faculty of Education, in consultation with the relevant Associate Dean(s). Where there is no candidate of sufficient merit, no prize will be awarded. If a prize is not awarded, the funds may be used in a subsequent year.

Recipients will be asked to write a letter of thanks, which will be forwarded appropriately.
