Information

Named after one of New Zealand's most distinguished composers, and Professor of Music at Victoria University of Wellington from 1971-76, this award recognizes excellence in the field of orchestral composition.

The prize is awarded at the end of the academic year for excellence in composition for orchestra or other large ensemble, typically on the basis of an exceptional piece that was composed and premiered in the year of the award.

This award has no cash prize. Its prestige comes from the fact that it is awarded by the composition department of the New Zealand School of Music for an outstanding student.

The selection panel shall consist of at least two full-time composers on the staff at the NZ School of Music and the Head of the School of Music (or their nominee).
