Information

This award was established in 2019 to honour the late Geoff Murphy who died in December 2018. Geoff was a leading figure in the fledgling New Zealand film industry in the 1970s. His career later took him to Hollywood where he directed blockbusters including Young Guns 2 and worked as a second unit director on Sir Peter Jacksonís Lord of the Rings. In 2014 he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to film.

The prize is awarded to the best student in the MFA(CP) Film programme whose work and approach embodies the independent spirit of Geoff Murphy. The student will have demonstrated a high standard of course work across their Trimester 1 and 2 courses, as well as in their final 590 course project.

The recipient will be selected by a panel of three industry judges and two members of the film programme staff.

Recipients will be asked to write a letter of thanks, which will be forwarded appropriately.
