Information

This prize arises from a donation in 1886 by the late John Tinline Esq. of Amuri. Until 1964 the fund provided a scholarship administered by the University of New Zealand and latterly by the University Grants Committee. In 1965 the fund was divided to provide a prize for each of the Universities.

1. The prize shall be known as the John Tinline Prize in English.

2. The prize shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the Chairperson of the Department of English Language and Literature to a student who is deemed worthy of the award, has completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with English (or English Language) as his/her major subject and who is proceeding to a Bachelor of Arts with Honours degree in English in the year following the award of the Prize.

3. The value of the prize shall be determined by the Academic Board after consideration of the income from the Fund and shall be payable in cash.

4. If in any year the whole of the income from the fund is not expended, the balance may be used in a subsequent year, or, if the Academic Board so decides, may be added to the capital fund.
