The prize and its associated fund was established by the family of Colin Patterson, a leading practitioner in Commercial and Company Law and Chairman of the Securities Commission, in recognition of his contribution to the discipline of law.
It is awarded for the best piece of writing by a student in Commercial, Securities or Company Law.

The prize and associated fund was established by the family of Colin Patterson, a leading practitioner in Commercial and Company Law and Chairman of the Securities Commission, in recognition of his contribution to the discipline of law.

1. The prize shall be known as the Colin Patterson Memorial Prize.

2. The prize shall be awarded annually by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the Dean of Law to the law student who, in the Dean's opinion, has done the best piece of writing in a commercial law, securities law or company law topic (including LLB Hons and LLM work).

3. The value of the prize shall be determined by the Academic Board after consideration of the income from the fund. Part of the prize money shall be spent on a book, or books.

4. If in any year part of the income from the fund is not expended, the balance may be added to the capital fund.
