This prize arises from a fund donated in 1982 by the Petone Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party in memory of Chris Highfield, a Victoria law student who had cystic fibrosis from birth and who died shortly after his graduation LLB from Victoria University.
It is awarded to the best student in class of Public Law

This prize arises from a fund donated in 1982 by the Petone Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party in memory of Chris Highfield, a Victoria law student who had cystic fibrosis from birth and who died shortly after his graduation LLB from Victoria University.

1. The prize shall be known as the Chris Highfield Memorial Prize in Public Law.

2. The prize shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Law to the student who has done the best year's work in the class of Public Law in the year of the award and who is worthy of the award.

3. The value of the prize shall be determined by the Academic Board after consideration of the income from the fund.

4. Part of the prize money shall be spent on a book, or books.
