This prize arises from a fund raised amongst teachers in New Zealand and officers of the Education Department to commemorate the work of the Rev. William James Habens, BA, who was the first Inspector-General of Schools 1878-1899, and has been supplemented by a donation from the Faculty of Education.
It is awarded to the best undergraduate student gaining at least 60 points for EPSY, EPOL, KURA or FEDU courses at 100, 200 or 300 level.

This prize arises from a fund raised by subscription amongst teachers in New Zealand and officers of the Education Department to commemorate the work of the Rev. William James Habens, BA, who was the first Inspector-General of Schools from 1878 to 1899, and has been supplemented by a donation from the Faculty of Education.

1. The prize shall be open to the best undergraduate student gaining during the year at least 60 points for EPSY, EPOL, KURA or FEDU courses at 100, 200 or 300 level.

2. The prize shall be offered annually and shall be an award to the student judged by the Dean of the Faculty of Education to be the best student worthy of the prize in the year of the award.

3. The value of the prize, in any year, shall be determined by the Academic Board after consideration of the income from the fund.

4. Part of the prize money shall be spent on a book, or books.

5. If in any year the whole of the income from the fund is not expended, the balance will be used in a subsequent year, or if the Academic Board so decides, may be added to the capital fund.

6. No student shall be awarded the Habens Prize more than once.
