Information

This prize honours the distinguished contribution by Maurice Gee to children's literature in New Zealand. A multi-award winning novelist, Maurice Gee is singular in New Zealand as the author of fiction of stature for both adults and young people. His classic titles "Under the Mountain" and "The Fat Man" are ground-breaking works in New Zealand children's writing. His writing for the young has embraced a number of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction, and has been central to the New Zealand child's reading life for two generations.

The prize is awarded to the author of the best folio in Victoria University of Wellington's undergraduate children's writing workshops and is awarded solely on the basis of literary merit. It may be held in conjunction with other awards.

The prize is awarded annually, subject to the appropriate course or courses being offered.

The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Institute of Modern Letters with the advice of the relevant course coordinators.

Recipients will be asked to write a letter of thanks, which will be forwarded appropriately.
