The prize arises from a fund subscribed in 1981 by friends of John and Maria Dronke, on the occasion of their Golden Wedding, to commemorate their contributions to the cultural life of the community especially in drama.
It is awarded for meritorious work in any aspect and at any level of drama studies.

The prize arises from a fund subscribed in 1981 by friends of John and Maria Dronke, on the occasion of their Golden Wedding, to commemorate their contributions to the cultural life of the community especially in drama.
1. The prize shall be known as the Dronke Prize for Drama.
2. The prize shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the Head of Section, Theatre, School of English, Film and Theatre to any matriculated student who has completed meritorious work in any aspect and at any level of drama studies, whether in acting, directing, design, playwriting, criticism or research.
3. The value of the prize in any year shall be determined by the Academic Board after consideration of the income from the fund.
4. Part of the prize shall be a book, books, video, tape or disk.
5. If in any year the whole of the income from the fund is not expended the balance shall be added to the capital fund.
