It will be awarded to the author of the best folio in Victoria University's undergraduate children's writing workshops.

This prize has been named to honour the distinguished contribution by Maurice Gee to children's literature in New Zealand. A multi-award winning novelist, Maurice Gee is singular in New Zealand as the author of fiction of stature for both adults and young people. His classic titles "Under the Mountain" and "The Fat Man" are ground-breaking works in New Zealand children's writing. His writing for the young has embraced a number of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction, and has been central to the New Zealand child's reading life for two generations. The prize is administered via the Victoria University Foundation.

1. The prize will be awarded to the author of the best folio in Victoria University's undergraduate children's writing workshops.

2. The award may be held in conjunction with other awards.

3. The prize will be awarded solely on the basis of literary merit.

4. The prize will be awarded annually, subject to the appropriate course or courses being offered.

5. The successful recipient shall be selected by the Director of the International Institute of Modern Letters (or nominee) with the advice of the relevant course coordinators.

6. Recipients may be asked to write a letter of thanks on receipt of this prize.
