To promote the study of Latin America in any field.


History or background of award
The Victoria Institute for Links with Latin America (VILLA), together with the Spanish Programme of Victoria's School of Languages and Cultures, wanted to enhance the profile of Latin American Studies at Victoria University and so decided to establish an essay prize.

Purpose of award
To promote the study of Latin America in any field.

Selection criteria
1. The essay shall be of between 1000 and 2500 words and may be written in English or Spanish on a topic relating to Latin America. Essays written as coursework for a course with a focus on Latin America may be submitted for consideration.
2. The student must be enrolled at Victoria University of Wellington.
3. The prize shall be awarded annually to the student who, in the opinion of the the Director of VILLA and the Spanish Programme at Victoria University, writes the best essay that is worthy of the award.
4. Students are to submit their essay to the Director of the Spanish Programme, or to the Director of VILLA.

$150.00 per year, subject to available funds.

Closing dates for applications
To be considered for the prize, an essay must be submitted by the end of Week 8 of Trimester 2 in any year in which the prize is awarded.

Decision makers
Director of VILLA and Director of the Spanish Programme.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The prize is administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Victoria Foundation.
Recipients are expected to write a letter of appreciation which will be forwarded appropriately.
