Information

History or background of award:
The Erasmus Scholarship was established by the late Mr D J Riddiford in 1962 to encourage the study of classical languages. It is open to school leavers and to students at Victoria University of Wellington who want to major in Greek or Latin.

Criteria:
This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who intend to complete the requirements for the BA with a major in Greek or Latin. Applications may come from school leavers who will study at Victoria University, and from university students who have already undertaken some study of Greek or Latin.
School leavers should submit a letter expressing their interest in studying Greek or Latin and the results of their NCEA Level 3 examination – or their results in the appropriate scholarship examination – in the year prior to the award. It is not a requirement that an applicant has studied either language before attending university, although it may be an advantage. It is a requirement that the applicant intends to major in Greek or Latin once at university.
University applicants must have completed at least one year's study, at any level, in Greek or Latin. They should submit a letter indicating that their current, or intended, major is in Greek or Latin. If they have attended a university other than Victoria, they must supply a transcript of their results in either, or both, of these languages.
