Hae-Jin Sung

As part of her PhD programme at Changwon National University in Korea, Hae-Jin Sung is spending a year working at Paihau—Robinson Research Institute.

“My professor in Korea introduced me to Robinson because he has a contact in the team. We have an ongoing collaboration as both teams are working on superconducting rotating machines.”

Hae-Jin has a Master’s degree in electronic engineering. For her PhD research, she is designing a superconducting generator for large-scale wind turbines and modelling an experimental flux pump.

“I knew nothing about flux pumps before I arrived, but they are very interesting and have a lot to do with my research. I’m enjoying being able to learn so much here.”

She originally planned to be in New Zealand for six months, but the time was extended to a year on her request.

“When I first came, everything felt very alien and I didn’t know anybody. But the people at Robinson are very kind and made sure I had everything I needed. My office mates are helping me improve my English and understand New Zealand culture—I really like them and am ‘stoked’ to know them!”

Hae-Jin will complete her studies in Korea and is planning a career in the country’s growing superconductivity applications and wind energy sectors.
