Postgraduate research students work under academic supervision. Read about how to find a supervisor and who to contact for help.

All students working towards a research degree are required to have at least one academic supervisor to mentor them and guide their work.

Finding a supervisor before you apply for admission is not always necessary. The final allocation of supervisors is done by the school, and takes into consideration research interests and available resourcing.

You can start your own search for a supervisor that you'd like to work with, and approach them directly to discuss your research project.

Making contact

If you’d like to talk to someone about supervision of your research degree you can:

• contact the postgraduate coordinator in the relevant subject area
• contact a member of academic staff directly through the relevant faculty or school.

Academic supervisors

Victoria’s academic supervisors will provide specialist knowledge, oversee the steps and stages of your research and guide you through your postgraduate research degree.

Master’s thesis candidates have at least one academic supervisor, while PhD candidates have two academic supervisors.
