Degree: Bachelor of Commerce with Honours majoring in Public Policy, Wellington School of Business and Government

‘Oceania is taking the plunge and living your dream!’

I am originally from Fiji and New Zealand is now my home. I completed my Bachelors of Commerce with majors in Economics and Public Policy last year and have just completed my Honours in Public Policy in July 2014. Prior to my current studies, I graduated with a Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) at the University of the South Pacific in 1998, and had worked for ten years in Fiji, Niue and the Cook Islands, in both the public and private sector.

I am originally from the village of Somosomo, in the Island of Taveuni which is part of the Cakaudrove province in Fiji. I attended Natabua High School in Lautoka from 1988-1992 and lived in a family of six siblings.

My main interests are in the public sector, in growing businesses and the economy. It is my dream to work in the New Zealand public sector and my studies in economics and public policy at Victoria University of Wellington has prepared me well for this; developed my capabilities and instilled a ‘can do’ mentality.

As a Pacific Islander, it is my hope that more Pacific people in New Zealand do well in both education and work. Having a good education is important for a successful life. Higher education opens doors to a better life, better employment opportunities and standards of living, and it helps in growing families. It also sets a precedent for future generations to aspire to higher education.

My advice to niu students: Show commitment and dedication in your studies and be competitive with the best in your class. No pain, no gain.
