Find out everything you need to know about the New Zealand School of Music’s undergraduate audition process, including application and preparation.
You will audition in front of a panel of New Zealand School of Music staff. Most auditions will have performance, skill testing and theory components.
Afterwards, there may be a short interview to get to know you better. You can expect to discuss your experience and career aspirations.
International students should contact Victoria International before auditioning.
Prepare for your audition
Read the requirements for your instrument to plan your performance and prepare for other tests.
If you are applying to study a Bachelor of Music in Classical or Jazz Performance, you will also sit a Music Theory Test when you audition.
Classical Performance requirements
Classical musicians are encouraged to bring their own accompanists. If necessary, the New Zealand School of Music can provide an accompanist, however, you must send a copy of the accompanying music with your application form. You’ll have a brief rehearsal with the accompanist before your audition.
Your audition pieces must be performed from memory.
Piano and guitar students
Preference may be given to candidates who play from memory.
