The concert opens with postgraduate student Luka Venter's new work, which has just been performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. This work will be followed by Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto, with soloist Honours student Nickolas Majic, winner of the NZSM Concerto Competition for 2019.

The concert concludes with Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony, one of his most popular symphonic works. The concert will be senior tutor and classical conductor Ken Young’s final concert after many years as conductor of the orchestra as a member of the NZSM staff. He will leave next year for the prestigious Mozart Fellowship in the University of Otago.
