Q&A with student Patrick Webb

Every so often we do a Q&A with one of our staff members or students as a way to get to know the NZSM community. This time we quiz Patrick Webb - trumpet student and co-president of the Te Kōkī Music Society.

Patrick Webb
What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to and why?

The best concert I have ever been to is without a doubt the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. I was so blown away with just how much beauty and consideration was placed into every note and every expression. Especially the principal trumpet player, Miroslav Petkov - his sound carried qualities of an double-reed soloist, or some kind of unfamiliar warm sonority - a sound that I will never forget and I will continue to feel inspired by. Hearing this world class orchestra on their home turf was very moving for me as a listener and a musician.

What are your non-musical hobbies?

My non-musical hobby is admin. Just trying to keep my head above water with all the emails and scheduling that happens behind every concert and performance…

Who is your favourite musician and why?

My favourite musicians are those that I know and hear frequently around Wellington, people like Dave Bremner, Oscar Laven, Buzz Newton, Lex French [before he moved to Canada], Simon Brew. I love what they play and it feels really special to hear them tell characteristic stories with their music.

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?

I would like to max out my credit card at Victoria University, if i could have the biggest student loan, the most ridiculous debt to the government that would be ideal… JK I'm too poor for a credit card. Next question please!

Do you have any strange phobias?

I’m afraid of the realisation that each moment influences and shapes your entire future at the same time it redefines your past. That is a lot of pressure! It honestly freaks me out if I think too hard about that.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

“If I could learn to do anything it would be to play jazz.”

What songs/ pieces would be on the soundtrack to your life?

I want Vulfpeck to be there, playing. I would want the soundtrack of the Lion King to appear in my most important life events. And while walking down the street I can hear Herb Alpert’s ‘Tijuana Taxi’ following me like an ironic cloud of brass musak.

Where are your favourite places to spend time in Wellington?

Rogue and Vagabond, Raglan Roast, Japan City, Fidels, Garage Project.
