The central city space will be shared by the University’s Computational Media Innovation Centre (CMIC) and the Wellington ICT Graduate School. CMIC was founded to foster cutting-edge research and innovation in the digital space, while the ICT Graduate School offers post-graduate training to support Wellington’s tech industry.

The new premises, located on the corner of Taranaki Street and Manners Street, are custom-designed to support collaboration, innovation, a high-quality student experience and research experience—including direct connections with industry—as well as attracting top local and international talent to the city.

Staff and students have access to a wide range of teaching and research spaces to support the research and teaching needs of different groups and projects, as well as the latest digital technologies to promote innovation. The central city location puts CMIC and the ICT Graduate School in the heart of the digital and tech industries, allowing students and staff access to the latest advances in industry practice and in turn providing a pipeline for the latest research developments to reach industry. The combination of these factors is designed to attract top talent to work and study at CMIC and the ICT Graduate School.

“We are thrilled with the location and what the new facilities will allow us to achieve,” says Professor Dale Carnegie, Dean of Victoria University of Wellington’s Faculty of Engineering, which oversees the CMIC research centre. “Being in the heart of the city reflects our need to work more closely with industry, and our desire to harness that spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation which is so uniquely Wellington.”
