Acting up with CubaDupa

Don’t miss CubaDupa this weekend! Victoria University of Wellington is involved in a number of events, including street performances arranged by Theatre programme director Dr Lori Leigh.

Victoria University of Wellington Actors Ensemble

Amongst them will be Victoria University of Wellington Actors Ensemble (VUWAE)—a theatre company established and directed by MFA (CP) student Nino Raphael—made up of current students who want to better their craft and create exciting theatre.

The Company focuses on building strong ensemble-based works and a collaborative environment in devising and performing theatre. Visiting contemporary texts and creating new theatre, VUWAE hopes to create theatre that resonates with them—as a company—and speaks to a young audience.

VUWAE will present the characters from the company’s premier cabaret show, Order Up, which premiered in February 2019 as part of the University’s ‘6 Degrees festival’ at BATS Theatre.

Other Victoria University of Wellington-associated events include:

  • A collaboration between students of Dr Leigh’s THEA 323 class, performance group ‘Insecurity Guards’, and the PlayShop Performance Company;
  • Cuba through Kiwi eyes—an exhibition at the University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Aotearoa New Zealand;
  • Kāinga (home) in the city—this event hosted by the University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design is part of the ‘Taking our Space in the City’ series, discussing how to create meaningful and equitable spaces for urban Aotearoa New Zealand;
  • A performance from the winner of the VUWSA Battle of the Bands competition.

In the aftermath of Christchurch, Cubadupa will now be held indoors. Keep an eye out on the CubaDupa website for updates.
