Christchurch aftermath

The University is continuing to provide support to students and staff in the wake of the Christchurch terrorist attacks. Details of how to access support are below.

The tribute wall in the Tim Beaglehole Courtyard at the Kelburn campus has been taken down and the panels are being stored indoors while we seek advice from conservation experts on how to stabilise and preserve the images. A comprehensive photographic and video record has also been gathered of the wall. Messages can still be written in chalk along the white inside wall.

Memorial books are still available at Info Ihonui sites at the Kelburn, Pipitea, and Te Aro campuses for anyone wanting to express their condolences to those affected.

Support for students and staff:

  • There is information about what is available on the Current Students’ Hub. Mauri Ora (Student Health and Counselling) has availability for students who need to access either service.
  • Staff and students can ring the 0800 04 04 04 (04 472 1000) number, and staff will be able to assist and guide you to access support and information as needed.
  • There is a national 24-hour free text or phone service 1737 for people who would like to speak to a trained counsellor at any time.
  • Staff who need additional support should contact your manager or Trish Knight, the University’s Manager, Staff Wellness.

The safety of our staff, students and visitors to our campuses is of paramount importance to us. Our security team is in contact with the Police and we are following their advice and assessing security risk on an ongoing basis. If you have safety concerns about anything on our campuses, please contact our security staff who will respond immediately. The emergency number for security staff is extension 8888, or 0800 842 8888 when calling from a cellphone.

The Vice-Chancellor recorded a video message in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, which can be viewed on YouTube.

Our community is one that values diversity and inclusivity. The University has received one or two culturally intolerant and divisive messages from outside the University that have been understandably hurtful to the recipients.

There is no place on our campuses or any of our digital realms for racist, bigoted, or threatening views or comments. If you do receive or see such a message, please pass it immediately to security staff.

If you witness inappropriate behaviour, do not hesitate to speak up and report it:
