Public meetings to discuss proposed change to University of Wellington

Three public meetings will be held next week to answer questions about the proposal to simplify Victoria University of Wellington’s name to 'University of Wellington'.

The Victoria University of Wellington Council has made a draft decision to recommend that the Minister of Education approve University of Wellington as the new legal name for the University, as well as adopt a new Māori name of Te Herenga Waka.

The draft decision also includes a commitment to the ongoing use of the word ‘Victoria’ to ensure its heritage is honoured and maintained.

The University will host three public meetings at Rutherford House in central Wellington next week. Details of the meetings are:

Monday 6 August        6pm     Rutherford House Lecture Theatre 1

Tuesday 7 August       6pm     Rutherford House Lecture Theatre 1

Wednesday 8 August 7pm      Rutherford House Lecture Theatre 2

No RSVP is needed.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford says anyone is welcome to attend the meetings and have their questions answered if they wish to find out more about the reasons behind the draft decision.

Those who can’t attend one of the meetings but would like to provide feedback can email it to ‘feedback@vuw.ac.nz’ or address it to ‘The Chancellor, Victoria University of Wellington, PO Box 600, Wellington 6140’. Feedback closes at 5pm Monday 13 August.

The University Council is expected to make a final decision at its 27 August meeting.
