- Duty counselling: for students who are in crisis, need brief counselling support to discuss an extension, late withdrawal, academic progress difficulties, or are unsure who to see to sort out a personal or academic issue. There are a number of sessions available every day with duty counsellors.
- Short-term counselling: for students who require one or two sessions with a counsellor. Students can generally access short term counselling within approximately two weeks.
- Routine counselling: for students who are seeking ongoing support. The wait time for this option varies from a few weeks to five or six weeks.
Students need to tell the Mauri Ora support staff in person or over the phone if they need to speak to someone urgently.
As well as counselling, the University offers wellbeing workshops, online wellbeing and self-help resources, appointments on campus with a psychiatrist, and an outreach nurse support service specifically for Māori, Pasifika, gender diverse and international students.
There is no set limit on how many times a student can be seen by Student Counselling each year. However, the service has a short-term focus and, where appropriate, links students who need longer, more intensive or specialist care to external support services.
Students who are seen by Student Counselling at Victoria University can expect to be treated with respect and care, receive clear explanations of how counselling works, set goals, and be provided with options for accessing external counselling services if appropriate.
Students can make an appointment at Student Counselling by visiting the Student Health and Counselling reception staff on either the Kelburn or Pipitea campus during opening hours or by phoning the support team on (04) 463 5310.
