A Victoria University of Wellington student has hit his stride on the running track and is embarking on a six-week racing trip in Europe.

James Preston is a promising middle-distance runner and the under-20 New Zealand record holder for the 800 metre event, with a time of 1:48.06.

His trip and set of races have been put in place to help build his skills, says James. “A summer campaign in Europe gives me the opportunity to compete against the best. It’s exciting.”

James is travelling to Belgium alongside his coach and another runner, and has a training base in Leuven thanks to Athletics New Zealand.

Steve Willis, lead distance coach at Athletics New Zealand, says: “Accessing high quality international competition is a high priority for New Zealand distance runners, especially those, like James, making the transition from juniors to high performance senior ranks.”

James has timed his trip to fit in with his studies—he is also studying part-time toward a Bachelor of Building Science, completing a double major in Project Management and Sustainable Engineering Systems.

“I really like carrying a project through from a concept into something physical. It’s a satisfying feeling. The subject is a good fit for me as I’m also getting a good understanding of architecture,” he says.

“I enjoy University work because it gives me something to focus on that isn’t running.”

The 21-year-old has received financial support from the University, Wellington Scottish Athletics Club and the Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation. He is also the recipient of a Prime Minister's Scholarship administered by High Performance Sport New Zealand, and the Brian Taylor Memorial Scholarship.

The former Scots College student has put in place an eight-year plan to help him achieve his goals. He hopes to qualify for the World Championships in Athletics in Doha next year, and ultimately compete in the Olympic Games and win a medal in a major championship.
